Neuroscience in Atlanta



Atlanta's Neuroscience Education & Training (NET/work) Program provides a two-year research assistantship for sophomore/second-year undergraduates from under-represented demographic groups at Agnes Scott, Emory, Georgia State, and Spelman.  The program begins with a summer in BRAIN (10-week, full-time, mentored research at Emory or Georgia State) and continues through the junior academic year with a part-time assistantship, followed by a second summer away doing research at a partner institution (15 partners nationwide), and culminating with the senior year back in the home lab (Emory or Georgia State).

NET/work is funded by an R25 in the BP-ENDURE Program at NIH.  Students can check eligibility, preview the online application, and request application login through the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience website:  http://www.cbn-atl.org/education/NETwork.shtml.

The application deadline has recently been extended to MARCH 8, 2013.

Undergraduate Fellowship in Computational Neuroscience: From Cells to Systems and Applications

Emory and Georgia Tech have partnered to support a two year training Fellowship for top students interested in Computational Neuroscience research, beginning in their junior year. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, Fellows will receive a stipend of ~$11,000/year for research conducted with one of 18 Program Faculty at Emory or Georgia Tech whose labs are modeling or analyzing neural data.

Fellows will also complete a training curriculum designed to enhance quantitative skills and learn about Computational Neuroscience. Joint activities between campuses include courses, a biweekly Methods Clinic, and an Annual Retreat. Details can be found at the program website, which is http://compneurosci.college.emory.edu. Curriculum for Emory students must include Introduction to Neurobiology (NBB 301) and the accompanying Computer Lab (NBB 301L); choice of one of the following research methods courses, Computational Methods for the Life Science OR Mathematics for Neuroscientists; choice of one of the following graduate level courses, Introduction to Computational Neuroscience (Emory IBS534) OR
Introduction to Neural Coding (GT BMED8813); Introduction to Research Careers (taught at Emory); and 2 years of research (including 2 lab rotations). Fellowship research is eligible for the Emory Honors Program and for class credit.

Atlanta area: Center for Behavioral Neuroscience

The Center for Behavioral Neuroscience in Atlanta offers a paid, two-year intensive neuroscience research apprenticeship to students from Emory, Georgia State, Agnes Scott, and Spelman.

NET/work (Neuroscience Education and Training) is a two-year, paid research assistantship that is open to sophomore students from Georgia State University, Agnes Scott College, Emory University, and Spelman College.  Students begin the program by participating in BRAIN 2012 and continue their laboratory research experience at Georgia State or Emory through their senior year. In addition to gaining hands-on research experience through one-on-one mentoring, students are provided with funding to travel to local and national conferences to present their research, participate in monthly professional development workshops, and travel to partner universities for additional training the summer following their junior year. Summer Research @ Woods Hole, MA

About Woods Hole:
The Marine Biological Laboratory is an international center for research, education, and training in biology. It was established in 1888 as an institute where marine organisms were used as model systems in the study of cell biology, neurobiology, and embryology. During the summer, the 270 year-round scientists and support staff of the MBL are joined by an additional 300 visiting scientists in our Whitman Center for visiting research, as well as 1200 graduate / postdoctoral students and faculty in our discovery courses, all from over 200 institutions throughout the world. Scientists are attracted to the MBL as well by the opportunity to collaborate with investigators at the other scientific institutions in Woods Hole. These include the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the United States Geological Survey, and the Woods Hole Research Center. In the small village of Woods Hole, this concentration of researchers and institutions results in a scientific community unparalleled in the world.

Summer School of Behavioral Endocrinology: One-Week Course at Emory & Travel to SBN meeting

The Summer School of Behavioral Neuroendocrinology, an intensive one-week course in the basic principles of behavioral neuroendocrinology,  is planned (pending funding) for July 10-17, 2010 on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Leaders in the field will be brought  to Emory from all over the U.S. to discuss topics such as sex differences in behavior and the nervous system, the effects of hormones on brain structures and processes, and the neuroendocrinology of stress. In addition to these discussions there will be workshops on bioinformatics and the analysis of hormone-dependent behaviors. The course is intended for undergraduates (or recent graduates) who are contemplating applying to graduate school. The aim is to give trainees an appreciation for behavioral neuroendocrinology as a discipline, as well as a sense of what it is like to have a career in science.   

Following the one-week course, trainees will attend the annual meeting of the Society for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology (SBN) in Toronto, Canada, July 18-22, 2010. Attending the SBN meeting is an excellent way for trainees to find graduate programs and faculty mentors with matching interests.

All travel expenses, room, and board in Atlanta and Toronto will be paid by the program. Students wishing to participate must commit to attending the entire course and SBN meeting (July 10-21, 2010). Note that travel to Canada requires a passport or a driver’s license AND  birth certificate.

Neuroscience research at Rutgers University, NJ

A 10 week summer research program is available for outstanding undergraduates from New Jersey who have a strong interest in a basic research experience with a focus on neuroscience. Students perform independent research projects in laboratories of the faculty on the Busch campus of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers University, located in central New Jersey. Areas of research include molecular and cellular aspects of neuronal and glial differentiation, pattern formation, endocrine and trophic functions, synaptic function and plasticity and gene diversity and regulation in the nervous system. Model systems in drosophilac. elegans and vertebrate species are used.

Summer Program in Computational Neuroscience at The University of Pennsylvania

Dates: June 1 – August 14, 2009

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Applications are invited for an intensive summer program of hands-on training to introduce undergraduate students to the principles and techniques of computational neuroscience. The summer program will be directed by Drs. Michael Kahana and Joshua Jacobs, of the University of Pennsylvania, in collaboration with over 22 Neuroscience faculty from Penn and allied institutions. 
 
An initial short course will introduce students to the basic methods of using computational techniques to model and analyze neuronal activity.   After the course, students will carry out research rotations in U. Penn laboratories, under the supervision of the faculty.  Lectures, chalk talks, and social events will continue throughout the summer.

All undergraduates with an interest in computational neuroscience are encouraged to apply.  Applicants are encouraged from a variety of backgrounds:  biology or psychology students seeking an introduction to more quantitative approaches, or students from engineering, physics, and related fields who seek exposure to neuroscience.  The goal of the program is to foster training that integrates experimental and theoretical approaches to understanding neural function.

Housing is available, if needed, on the Penn campus, and a stipend will be provided to cover living expenses.
