2014 SURE Application Deadline EXTENDED

SURE Deadline Extension: The SURE application deadline has been extended to 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10th, 2014, for all applicants (Emory students and external applicants).

Because of the recent Emory University closing during inclement weather, many faculty-student meetings were cancelled, delaying application plans.  Therefore, we'll extend the student application deadline by one week across the board.  However, please note that the deadline for the receipt of faculty letters of recommendation will remain the same: due Monday, Feb. 10, 2014.

Research at the Pasteur Institute in Paris

Summer 2011 Undergraduate Internships at the  Institut Pasteur for US citizens

The internships are a unique  chance for undergrads to work in biological labs over the course of the summer...in Paris at the world-recognized Institut Pasteur.

Eligibility: Applicants must 1) be undergraduates with an excellent academic record and a strong interest in biosciences and biomedical research (prior lab experience is highly recommended); 2) have completed three full years (six semesters) of college course work by the time the internship commences; and 3) not have received an undergraduate degree at the time of application. Knowledge of French or desire to learn it is advisable. This program is open to U.S. citizens only.

Summer Research Program Life Sciences and Technology at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), will offer an intensive research training opportunity to 25 undergraduate students interested in research careers in life sciences. This program will run from July 4th to August 26th 2011.

Emory's International Research Experience in the Sciences IRES

The IRES program supports Emory undergraduates in scientific research in international labs.  We help support students who are working with collaborators of their Emory mentors, or placed with an HHMI international scholar, or through a program like DAAD or the Pasteur Foundation.  Applications are due in Fall for the following summer.

Summer research in Germany (RISE Program)

RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. It offers unique opportunities for undergraduate students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 1.5 to 3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. The working language will be English. All scholarship holders receive stipends from the DAAD to help cover living expenses, while partner universities and research institutes provide housing assistance.

Undergraduate summer research: information technology at U. Illinois Urbana-Champaigne

The Information Trust Institute (ITI), a national leader in combining research and education with industrial outreach in trustworthy and secure information systems, invites undergraduates to apply for Undergraduate Research Internship awards for Summer 2010. Selected students will be supervised by ITI researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who are leading experts in a number of information trust, information assurance, and cyber security research areas. 

Interns will work for 40 hours a week, including attendance at two weekly seminars. One of the weekly seminars will be a technical presentation from a University of Illinois faculty member; the other will be a presentation on ethics in the responsible conduct of information technology research and development. Other enrichment events will include sessions on preparing for graduate study and pursuing careers in engineering and computing. At the conclusion of the internship, each intern will present the summer's work at a poster session and write a technical paper describing his or her research accomplishments.

All interns will receive stipends and housing.

Fight for Sight Summer Student Fellowships

Summer Student Fellowships support undergraduates, graduate, and medical students enrolled at a U.S. institution interested in pursuing eye-related clinical or basic research. Those selected will receive $2100. The fellowship will last from June to August.

AAUW Fellowships and Grants for U.S. and International Women

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) offers fellowships for women, in all research areas, once they complete a bachelor's degree. They also have a fellowship for non-US citizens. Deadlines are in December.

Encourage students to register to present their work!  Please distribute the attached registration form widely.  Registration is due Oct 2nd. Graduate student volunteers will judge the presentations and give feedback to each student.  Encourage students in your classes to attend – maybe even a few participation points for turning in a short summary or interview of a few students?

Nanoscholars Abroad Program - South Africa (June 7- July 31, 2009)

The Center for Functional Nanoscale Materials, a NSF Center for Research Excellence for Science and Technology, is inviting applications for the 2009 Nanoscholars Abroad Program.   The 2009 Nanoscholar Abroad Program begins June 7, 2009 at the CFNM, Atlanta Georgia, and continues through July 31, 2009 with the return of the participants from Cape Town, South Africa.  Participants will spend two weeks at the CFNM in Atlanta before departing for the iTHEMBA LABS in Cape Town, South Africa for the remaining six weeks of the program.  Each participant will work on a personal project, which is concerned with some aspect of an ongoing collaboration between CFNM researchers and iTHEMBA LABS scientists.  While in South Africa participants will be supervised by senior scientists at the iTHEMBA LABS and will also have a senior scientist from the CFNM as local counselor.

Participation in this program is open to undergraduate students, who are majoring in one of the science or mathematics disciplines and who plan to attend graduate school after graduation.  Applicants should be rising sophomores, juniors or seniors with a major in the sciences or mathematics and should be in good academic standing at their home institution.  Interested students should apply as early as possible by completing the application found on http://www.cfnm.cau.edu/applications.html.  

Each participant will be provided with round trip transportation from their point of origin to the CFNM in Atlanta as well as round trip transportation between Atlanta and Capetown, South Africa.  While in Atlanta participants will be provided with room and board and while in South Africa participants will be provided with housing and a per diem allowance.  In addition, participants will receive a stipend of $3,200 dollars (US) for their participation in the program.
